SUMMARY:Field Trip – Hike the Black Bear Wilderness Area (Sanford)
DESCRIPTION:The Black Bear Wilderness Area is about 1600 acres of natural wonder in northwest Seminole County. But don’t worry\, we won’t be hiking 1\,600 acres. \nIt features a variety of wetland habitats—wet prairie\, hydric hammock\, and cypress swamp—within the St. John’s River floodplain. These habitats form a mosaic of diversity which hosts white-tailed deer and Florida black bear and an impressive number of bird species. Its large size and proximity to other public lands make this an important piece in a puzzle connecting natural areas between the Wekiva/St. John’s basins and the Ocala National Forest. Our trip leader is Patti Smith. \nThe group will have a couple of options on the day of the hike: \n1) we can take the boardwalk and trail to the St. John’s River. The trail is shaded with a canal/pond alongside to the river\, or\n2) we can be more adventurous and explore the 7.1-mile loop trail along the St. John’s River. This option takes about two hours. \nWhere to meet: Carpooling may be available for this trip. DESCRIPTION:Audubon Christmas Bird Count at Corkscrew \nDate: Saturday\, December 14\, 2019 \nTime: 6:30am – 6:30pm \nDescription:\nThis year marks the 120th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC)\, the longest-running community science project in the world.  The Corkscrew Count Circle area is one of over 2000 Count Circles from many countries in the western hemisphere that participate each year.   \nThis year’s Corkscrew CBC will be held on Saturday\, December 14\, 2019. \nThe Corkscrew CBC Count Circle is divided up into eleven team areas.  There is a team captain in charge of each team who decides the plan and the start time for the team. Most teams meet to start in the parking lot of the Blair Audubon Center.  All teams come back to the classroom of the Blair Center at the end of the day to drop off their data forms or to stay for the Round up Dinner\, when we begin compiling all of the data from each team.  \nParticipants do not have to be expert birders to participate\, there is usually a mix of experience levels on each team.  The CBC is a great way for beginning birders to become more knowledgeable about the birds and their habitats.  \nThis circle is open to accepting participants from the general public\, interested participants should contact Sally Stein\, Corkscrew CBC Compiler\, at sstein@audubon.org for more information and to register.

St. Augustine Social is doing an article on the Chapter for its July/August edition and is sending a photographer prior to the start of the walk. We’d love to have you included in any photos! \nJoin us as we walk the Ancient Dunes Trail at Anastasia State Park with Rhonda Lovett. We also plan to walk the new marsh trail that the ASP staff opened. \nNOTE: There is a Park fee of $4.00 per car if there is only one person and $8.00 per car if two or more people are in the car. \nLet’s meet up in the big parking lot near the gazebo.
