The bird count provides a kid-friendly alternative to the Audubon Christmas Bird Count\, a century-old citizen science program that collects information about birds. This free program is a great introduction to birding for children ages 8-14 and brings families and the community together to enjoy nature during the holiday season. \nWhat to Expect:\nTo start the program in Heron Hall\, kids first participate in “Binocular Boot Camp” to learn basic bird identification and binocular skills before splitting up into small teams(each with an expert birder) for a 3/4 mile hike through different habitats. We will be visiting the garden\, forest and lake searching for as many different species as we can find. \nAfter the hike\, participants will return to Heron Hall to share their findings with the whole group.
