DESCRIPTION:Come and enjoy the Orlando Wetlands Festival on Saturday\, February 17\, 2018\, from 9am-3pm at Fort Christmas Historical Park. The Orlando Wetlands Festival highlights the Orlando Wetlands Park\, the City’s 1\,650 acre water reclamation wetland. The event is sponsored by: City of Orlando\, Orange Audubon Society and Orange County Parks and Recreation.\nOn February 17\, 2018\, experience this unique wetland treatment system with the entire family. Event co-sponsor\, Orange Audubon Society\, will lead guided bird-watching excursions. The Friends of the Orlando Wetlands will lead wetland exploration hikes and the Florida Native Plant Society will lead native plant identification hikes. Bring your camera and join guided photo hikes led by professional photographers. For those who like to sit and ride\, guided bus tours will travel along the wetland berms\, giving riders a chance to experience firsthand\, Florida’s wild wetlands.\nIn addition to the numerous guided tours\, there will be bird-banding and mist-netting demonstrations\, as well as\, live music by Homer Stiles. Featured in the various wildlife shows\, many different live animals will be present such as alligators\, snakes\, birds and many others. Also\, free native wildflowers and backyard wildlife plants will be given away to encourage biodiversity.\nThere will be interactive children’s activities\, bounce houses\, hay rides and much more! We will look for winter wood-warbler flocks\, Reddish Egrets\, Magnificent Frigatebirds and more. Both Mangrove Cuckoo and White-crowned Pigeon have been recorded at this site during the winter months so we will keep an eye out for them as well. Participants will have the opportunity to earn their Wings Over Florida birding certificate. Wings Over Florida is a free bird and butterfly listing recognition program that rewards people for their Florida life list and big year list achievements. Certificates are awarded to participants when they reach one or multiple listing milestones. We offer 6 birding life list certificates\, 1 big year birding certificate and 6 butterfly life list certificates. SUMMARY:Wings Over Florida field trip - Blackwater Fisheries Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trail coordinator Whitney Gray and Wings Over Florida coordinator Andy Wraithmell for a hike around this wonderful birding trail site. We will walk the dikes between the aquaculture ponds\, looking for wintering wildfowl such as Ring-necked Duck and Blue-winged Teal. Wilson’s Snipe feed along the muddy edges. Bachman’s Sparrows and Brown-headed Nuthatches are fairly common and Henslow’s Sparrow has been recorded in the winter. Participants will have the opportunity to earn their first Wings Over Florida certificate. \nThe walk is limited to 25 people. This event is FREE and family-friendly. We encourage youth participation.\nThe walk is suitable for all experience levels but is aimed at beginner and intermediate level bird watchers. \nREGISTER HERE
